Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has said that the administration of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan spent billions of naira and millions of dollars on efforts to equip the Nigerian military against Boko Haram insurgents, but there was aggressive abuse of trust, NAN reports.
The president who made the remark while addressing members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, December 9, urged the legislature to join hands with the executive arm of government to secure the country and effectively manage it.
According to him, the major challenge in the security of the country was the threat posed by the Islamist terror group, Boko Haram but added that the leadership of the country had set clear targets towards re-equipping the military to neutralize the insurgents.

However, the president, observed that his administration uncovered that the previous administration expended “billions of naira and hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire military equipment but with several abuses of trust, adding that the abuse of trust cost Nigeria lives and equipment.
Buhari also observed that Nigeria, which had earned reputation in the fight against criminal activities and defence of territories abroad, found out that it could no longer defend a few local government areas occupied by insurgents.
He noted that he took the initiative of seeking the collaboration of the international community to be able to win the war against terrorism.
The Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, in his reponse said that the support of his colleagues would be total to ensure that the government bequeathed something meaningful to posterity.

Just recently, Jonathan and the former minister of finance, Dr. Nogozi Okonjo-Iweala, allegedly transferred at least N61.4b ($300 million and £5.5 million) from funds recovered from the late head of state, Sani Abacha, to the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, few weeks to the 2015 presidential election.
According to reports, the former minister illegally signed off on the transfer but then closed her eyes to how the funds were spent, requesting former President Goodluck Jonathan to demand accountability from the former NSA.
