The embattled governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has gotten a breakthrough with the state’s House of Assembly.

Daily Post reports that the governor’s 2015 supplementary budget for the state was passed into law on Tuesday, December 8, by the House.

The leader of the House, who presented the motion, Martins Amaewhule, said the bill was aimed at making sure the governor has the legal backing to spend money into more projects in the state.

It was gathered that after a unanimous vote by the lawmakers, the Speaker of the House, Ikunyi Igbani passed the bill into law.

Meanwhile, sections of the House Standing order (Order 50) were set aside in order for the bill scale through for a quick passage of less than an hour.

The supplementary budget which has a profile of N104, 287,285,108, is expected to be earmarked for capital expenditure.

The Speaker stated that it was very important for the lawmakers to execute its functions in sustaining development in the state.

“Governance is not about paying salaries alone. It is also about bringing meaningful development and taking into account the environment we live in.

“This supplementary budget of N104billion is meant to help the government achieve this,” he said.

According to the breakdown of the supplementary budget, the judiciary in the state is expected to get the sum of N1billion while the legislature has N2 billion. It is said that the housing ministry will get the sum of N10 billion while over N40 billion will be expended in the state’s ministry of works

Everything seem to be cordial with the state’s assembly and Governor Wike as it would be recalled that the House had earlier approved his request to appoint five new special advisers. The approval was secured after the House leader moved a motion on behalf of the other lawmakers to grant the governor’s request.

In another development, the state’s assembly also screened and confirmed Odame Iyenebari Theophilus and Austine Tam George as commissioner designates into the state Executive council. So far a total of 22 commissioner nominees have also been screened into the state Executive council.

The hope of the embattled governor was on Thursday, December 3, dashed by the court of appeal in Abuja, after Justice Dongban Memsem, the presiding judge held that his appeal to set aside the judgment of the Justice Suleiman Ambursa-led election petition tribunal which annulled his election, would be decided along with the motion and preliminary objection on a yet-to-be announced date.
