As the world celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, popularly known as Christmas, on Friday, December 25, was on the streets of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja to monitor the celebrations.

It was observed that while government offices at the federal secretariat and other parts of the city were shut down with low vehicular movement on major roads within the city owning to the public holidays, fun seekers took to major parks and recreational centers to mark the day.

Amidst heavy security checks at the entrance in Millennium park, resident who gained entry into the park were seen in groups having family picnics, while others were walked about in admiration of the green lush scenery.

While younger children were seen on swings, bouncy castles and other toys in the park, the more adventurous ones enjoyed the royal ride on horses.

Worthy of note was the fact that some Muslims also joined in the celebration after the Jummah prayers at the national mosque located in the central business district.

The day was also a good opportunity for business people who made extra money from taking photographs, sale of food and drinks,  as well as barbecue meat popularly known as “suya.”

Some residents who spoke to  urged Nigerians to show love, give to the needy and ensure good neighbourliness in their communities. There were also messages of hope for a better year 2016.

December 25, every year is set aside for the celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ all over the world.
