Ifiok Umanah, the elder brother to Akwa Ibom state commissioner for information, Aniekan Umanah has been kidnapped.
He was kidnapped by unknown gunmen along Hospital Road in Abak, The Nation reports.
Eyewitnesses said Umanah’s abductors shot sporadically into the air to scare away passersby before they took him away.
According to the commissioner who was away when the incident happened, security operatives were already making efforts to rescue his brother.

He added that the kidnappers had not contacted the family yet.
“There is no contact yet. You know I’m not around, I just came in. Security operatives are working hard to ensure his rescue,” the commissioner added.
Kidnapping is one of the major problems facing Nigerians. It became popular when some militants in Southern Nigeria did it to get the attention of the government to the degradation of people of Niger delta region. But now, it has been become a business and some jobless youths see it as an avenue to make quick money.
There have been a number of kidnappings this year. In November, Madam Ogere Siasia, the elderly mother of the Dream Team VI coach, Samson Siasia was kidnapped from her house in Odoni village, Sagbama local government area of Bayelsa state. She later regained her freedom after spending close to two weeks in the kidnappers’ den.
In the same month, Krinpere Douglas, a cousin of Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate for Bayelsa state, was kidnapped by armed men.
