Jonathan’s Minister Calls For Removal Of Immunity For Government Officials

Nigeria’s former minister of information, Labaran Maku today, December 3, called for the removal of immunity clause for elected public officials  from the constitution. 

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Maku made the remark while speaking to some journalists in Wakama, Akun Development Area of Nassarawa state where he hails from.

Maku, 54, stated that  the removal of the immunity clause would help tackle corruption and ensure good governance in Nigeria.  He specifically advocated for the removal of the clause that protects the president, governors and local government council chairmen from facing prosecution.

According to him, the immunity clause had created an umbrella for some state governors to misuse their state resources, which he opined has lead to underdevelopment in most at the grassroots.

Maku  also advised Nigerians to pray for better things in the New Year as well as pray for permanent peace to reign in Nigeria.

He said: “Let us also pray for the peace of the country and give President Muhammadu Buhari the needed support and cooperation to enable him tackle the challenges facing the country.

“I believe that the immunity of state governors should be removed, no governor needs immunity and if it is removed, this will help to check fraud, corruption and mismanagement.’’

Recently, because according to him, the former minister failed  to rescue the kidnapped Chibok girls as the supervising Minister of Defence in the last administration.

In a statement made available to newsmen, Al-Makura had said the probe on Maku was necessary so as justice and fairness to the parents and guardians of the missing girls can be served.

Recall that Maku contested the last governorship election in the state with Governor Al-Makura, and he is in the election petition tribunal challenging the results which was declared in favour of the governor.
