Plateau state commissioner for tourism, Mr Peter Mwankon, told journalists in Jos, the Plateau state capital that the king of the jungle was named after Governor Simon Lalong in appreciation of his dedication towards the tourism sub-sector of the state’s economy.
Mwankon said a one-and-half-year-old baby lion replaced the older lion which was killed in 2015 after it escaped from its cage during the daily feeding schedule at the Jos Wildlife Park.
The commissioner for tourism also said the local authorities lamented the killing of the lion which occurred as a result of some limiting conditions.

Mwankon furthermore said the participation of marksmen from the military and the police in tracking and killing the lion was to save the immediate community from danger as it could have turned untamed.
The tourism commissioner said it was sad some animal rights advocates insisted that the act constituted brutality to animals.
He observed that the new replacement, a cub, was through a trade by barter with the Sanda Kyarimi Zoological Park in Maiduguri, Borno, in order to add to the tourism potential of the Jos Wildlife Park.
Mwanjon described the lion as a point of attraction to the park, which was expected to increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue and developmental projects.
He gave words of assurance that the management of the park has set machineries in motion in order to prevent animals from escaping from their cages inside the park.
He said: “The administration of Governor Simon Lalong is poised to ensure the escape saga of last year does not occur again and more varieties of animals are acquired.
“The state government is also working toward getting tranquilizers in quelling animals when an escape incident occurs rather than kill them. Such drugs require some bureaucratic process to get because of its function.”
On the other hand, he said more workers were being trained on captivity skills, animals’ husbandry and other related skills to build their capacity at carrying out their duties..
NAN gathered that the lion escaped from its cage during one of its routine feedings in 2015 and it was killed as the authorities lacked the means to recapture and return it alive.
In a report on this same platform at least seven days ago, about 22 people were killed by men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen who reportedly attacked some communities in Plateau state.
