Don’t relocate Maritime University or… – Niger Delta group cautions Buhari

– The Oil Producing Area Association of Nige­ria has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to halt moves to relocate the Maritime University

– The group said the relocation could further aggravate the security situation in the Niger Delta region

A Niger Delta group, Oil Producing Area Association of Nige­ria, (OPAAN), has cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari not to relocate the Maritime University from Okerenkoko to Ibusa.

The group said such action could incite the oil communities and the Niger Delta region against Buhari’s administration, Daily Sun reports.

A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja and signed by OPAAN’s national secre­tary, Chief Chris Obiuwevbi and Dr. Alfred Mulade, statement read in part: “It has come to our notice that the Nigerian Mari­time University, Okerenkoko, is being consid­ered for relocation to a proposed Navy Second­ary School, Ibusa, Delta state.”

The group noted there was nowhere in the world where naval institutions were estab­lished far inland, just as school facili­ties for the children of naval officers and men were usually co- located or in close proximity.

According to him, certain security chiefs close to the presidency were bent on precipitating cri­sis to undermine the genuine intentions of the administration of Pres­ident Buhari.

The group noted if the Maritime University was relocated, it could further aggravate the security situation in the region which is already hostile due to the resurgence of militant groups such as the Niger Delta Avengers.
