Good news: Tomato price finally crashes, guess how much a basket is sold?

– Reports have shown that tomato is now being sold for N800 per basket as against the N25000/N40000 it was few weeks back

– A trader says in Kaduna says the fear of tomato scarcity is gone now and hopefully for good

– He says tomato scarcity was made worse this year by the invasion of the moth

After months of pains and outcries following the hike in the price of tomatoes, fresh reports have shown that the commodity has crashed to a two-month low.

According to a report on The Cable, there was a pleasant relief in Kaduna state on Saturday, July 30, following the availability of tomatoes and vegetable as it is now sold for N800 per basket.

Buyers could not believe their eyes at the Line Dogo (Rail Line) in Kaduna as tomato prices had crashed to a two-month low.

Abass Mai Tumatur, chairman of the tomato sellers, told The Cable that tomato is now available and in large quantities.

He said: “Tomato scarcity is nothing new, but it was made worse this year by the invasion of the moth.

“The insects mutate more during the dry season but don’t survive during the rainy season.

“The rains coupled with the efforts of government have helped tremendously in making tomato available,” he said, praising the government for the “timely intervention”.

He assured the public that the fear is gone now “and hopefully for good”.

The price of tomatoes had hit the roof across the country as a result of scarcity caused by tuta absoluta, also known as ‘tomato ebola’.

This affected the crop in most parts of the north-west, notably Kaduna, Jigawa, Katsina and Kano states.

As a result, the basket prices jumped from the range of N800-N1200 to between N25,000 and N40,000 at the height of the crisis but it’s now back to its former price.
