Apostle Tommy Yisa Aika, the primate and founder of the Glory Church of Christ in Egor, the outskirts of Benin city, Edo state capital has warned the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against hiring a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.
Speaking in an interview on Daily Independent, Apostle Aika said he has had a long relationship with the Super Eagles, but it began to head south after the then NFA, now NFF, began to jettison their promises to him.

Aika recalled how his prayers helped the Super Eagles qualify for the 2002 and 2010 World Cup and why the Super Eagles failed to qualify in 2006 when the football authority decided to do away with him.
He said: “My relationship with the Super Eagles started 15 years ago. That was 2001 when the Super Eagles were having difficulties in winning its matches towards qualification for the 2002 World Cup. A certain seer had told Nigerians to forget the 2002 World Cup. He predicted that the Super Eagles would not be at the mundial. I wrote a letter to the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA) president, Dominic Oneya, telling him in details what I will do to avert the looming disaster. I was called to a meeting where I reiterated my plans and was given the go ahead to do as I had enumerated. I gathered my prayer warriors and we commenced spiritual warfare to counter the evil plot against the Super Eagles.
“As of that time, we had three matches left which we must win to guarantee our qualification for the tournament. In the first match, which was against Sudan on their soil, we gave them four goals to nil. The president of Sudan had a week prior to the day of the match called on his countrymen and women to engage in an intensive seven days prayer and fasting to overcome Nigeria but I and my team were able to subdue them in that aspect. In the match against Liberia, which was then leading the pack, we won 2 – 0 and in the final match against Ghana, we defeated them 3-0. Now, is that not enough for them to appreciate God for what he is doing? The marvelous job was done by Coach Shuaibu Amodu who was elevated from his former position of assistant to Bonfrere Jo to the post of chief coach. However, a few months to the competition, the NFA eased out Amodu and replaced him with Festus Onigbinde.
“I got nothing for my effort but I kept on doing what I good at through the promptings of the Holy Spirit. On December 22, 2003, I met Taiwo Ogunjobi, who was then a top official of the NFA. Cameron was then acting as a barrier to our ambition to win the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia. I was assured of getting a portion of the players’ bonus if the Super Eagles were able to subdue Cameroun. We won the match 2 – 1. But barely had we overcome the Cameroonian threat when the president of the supporters club, Rafiu Ladipo, went to town with a tale of how he and his club members went into prayers and fasting to ensure that the Super Eagles won. Based on that claim, the president of the NFA jettisoned his promise to me.
“Towards the 2006 World Cup, I deliberately kept away from the Super Eagles so as enable Ladipo and his supposed supporters club prayer warriors to intervene so that we can qualify, but they could not do anything tangible. I had to put my reputation at stake once again in 2009 when our qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was experiencing some hiccups. The government had to set up a Presidential Task Force (PTF) headed by Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, then governor of Rivers State, to ensure our qualification. I went into prayers and fasting as usual for the success of the team and they were able to scale through. I got no recognition for my effort to the extent that those I normally engage to join me in the prayer sessions now doubt the veracity of my claim that I have not been benefitting from the government.
“Despite my counsel that not foreign coach should be engaged to handle the Super Eagles, the football administrators went ahead to hire a foreign coach for the 2010 World Cup. That did not augur well with us in the spiritual realm and that was the reason for our poor outing in the tournament. God has promised the Super Eagles that they will be the first African country to lift the World Cup trophy but on the condition that no foreign coach should be on the bench in whatever capacity. Not even as a friend of Nigeria. Our football administrators are hell bent on having a foreign coach for the Super Eagles because of the pecuniary benefits that would accrue to them and those were what Chris Giwa was and still is fighting against, but they are ganging up against him.
“Super Eagles will surprise the world. What is needed is for the government to pay me the outstanding debt they owe me, which runs into millions of naira. I will then build a sanctuary where I and my prayer warriors will go into supplication for the Super Eagles’ success at the 2018 World Cup.”
NAIJ.com recalls that the Super Eagles have been without a permanent coach since Sunday Oliseh quit the post in February.
And although Caretaker manager Salisu Yusuf guided Nigeria to victories over Mali and Luxembourg in two friendly matches in May, the NFF president Amaju Pinnick has publicly declared his intention to appoint a foreign manager for the country instead, following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2015 and 2017 Nations Cup tournaments under local managers.
The NFF also moves to bring in a foreign coach ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers as Nigeria have been drawn in group B alongside champions Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia.
French man Paul Le Guen, Caretaker coach Salisu Yusuf and Tom Sainfiet are on a three-man shortlist to replace Sunday Oliseh as Nigeria coach.
