The Deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, has to be one of the most longest serving senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the National Assembly.

As many challenging positions suffer bad times, Ekweremadu who was born on May 12  has also experienced rocky times as the deputy Senate president.

Just recently, he was charged to court along side Bukola Saraki, the Senate president, Salisu Maikasuwa, the immediate former clerk to the National Assembly, and Benedict Efeturi, his deputy, over alleged forgery of the 2015 Senate standing rules .However, Ekweremadu has repeatedly reiterated his innocence on the matter.

Apart from his general role as the deputy Senate president, what more do you know about him? NAIJ.com has compiled 10 facts to know about him.

1. He is married to Nwanneka Ekweremadu and is blessed with four children.

2. He has served in the Senate since May 2003 under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party and is currently the deputy Senate president for the third consecutive time.

3. The deputy Senate president was born in 1962 at Amachara Mpu in Aninri local government area of Enugu state.

4. He obtained a bachelors and masters degree in Law from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.

5. Ekweremadu was appointed Secretary to the Enugu State Government in 2002 and won the best local government chairman award in Enugu state at the time.

6. He lost the Senate presidency seat to Senator Kenechukwu Nnamani in 2005.

7. In September 2009, he was named co-chairman of a committee to conduct the primary elections for the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate for Anambra state.

8. He was elected as the first deputy speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) parliament and emerged the Speaker of the regional parliament in August 2011.

9. He survived an assassination attack between Apo Flyover and Dantata Construction Company’s yard, close to the Old Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters junction as the deputy senator was on his way to work.

10. He started a foundation in 1997 which deals with scholarships to indigent students, micro-credit and widowhood support schemes and adult literacy centres among others.
