Napoli legend Diego Maradona was reportedly detained by Argentina’s border force on Sunday night for allegedly holding a false passport.

According to Euro Sport per reports in Argentina, Maradona was hoping to fly out to Dubai from Buenos Aires with his partner Rocio Oliva but was stopped by border police who accused him of carrying stolen travel documents.

Maradona who eventually missed his flight called a lawyer and was eventually released and told Diario Popular that he believed the incident was politically motivated.

“I won’t let anyone control my life,” he said. “For 15 years, I’ve done what I want and no-one can tell me what to do. This complaint for theft is nonsense.

“My lawyer will be responsible for investigating this lie, which has been orchestrated by some politician.”

Maradona is regarded by many as the greatest player ever to play the game of football alongside Brazilian Pele.

The Argentinian played for the likes of Boca Juniors, Napoli, Sevilla and Barcelona in a trophy littered career.
