Cobhams Asuquo

Award-winning Nigerian musician, producer, and songwriter, Cobhams Asuquo, is best known for producing hits for huge Nigerian stars like Asa, Darey and Timi Dakolo. In 2005, he was signed to Sony ATV London as a songwriter. He first started out as the head of audio productions at  Questionmark Entertainment before leaving to set up his own recording studio in 2006, CAMP (Cobhams Asuquo Music Productions).

In a recent chat with NAIJ.com, he spoke on his work as an artiste and a music producer, and about his upcoming concert Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless.

What have you been up to?

I am working on some personal music for myself, I am excited about that. I am also working on some project with Timi Dakolo, BankyW, Omawumi, 2face and some couple of people, I am also really excited about. And I am doing my concert, Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless. I am filming… So, I am doing a lot of exciting things right now.

How would you rate Nigerian music in the last two years, and where do you see the industry in the nearest future?

I will say our music is only our biggest social export. We are making amazing music and the world is receiving our music and our musicians are taking center stage, so it is a time to be in the Nigerian music industry. Music is art and is expression and different people subscribe to different form of expression. I think we are finding our various forms of expression as a people and it’s never ever going to be the same. I think the best position to nurture is to give room to varieties.

Tell us more about Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless.

I will say it is the definition of consummate entertainment and it describes an action word – what complete entertainment is. It portrays the greatness of the artistes (performing), I mean, 2face, MI – and it defines what musicians are made of and just how they should come through. I can’t tell people what I will be doing out there but it will be ridiculous. It would be the most ridiculous thing you have ever thought of. It will be crazy, incredible, unbelievable, and is beyond just performing.
