Leader of the catholic church and San Lorenzo fan, Pope Francis has named Barcelona legend Lionel Messi as his pick for the greatest footballer of all time.

According to the leader of the Catholic church, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner  is a better player than fellow Argentine Diego Maradona and Pele.

Messi has constantly been compared to past greats Pele and Diego Maradona, while also going head-to-head with current Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

“For me, [Lionel] Messi is better than Maradona and Pele,” Pope Francis told young men and women participating in World Youth Day.

Messi  announced his retirement from national team duty after Argentina lost to Chile on penalties in the Copa America Centenerio final.

The 29-year-old played his part as Barcelona won 3-1 win against Celtic in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.
