– SUBEB chairman has spoken on how retired teachers die in Cross River state
– During a workshop for teachers, the chairman spoke on the need for training

Dr Stephen Odey the chairman of Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board, (SUBEB) has revealed some shocking statistics. He said that out of 440 cases of retirement in the state, 12 of them died in a period of 10 months after.
While speaking during the Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE), Cycle II workshop for teachers that was held at the college of education in Akamkpa, Cross River.
He also said that out of the 440 retired teachers, those who retired include 404 teaching staff, 24 non-teaching staff while 12 teaching and non-teaching staff died in 10 months.
According to Vanguard, he explained: “From October 2015 till date, we have had about 440 cases of retirement and death of teaching and non-teaching staff in primary schools in the state.”
To put a stop to things like this, Odey said the board would in the near future need to recruit about 500 to 1000 teachers. The new recruits would be subjected to an aptitude test and an oral interview.

He also said: “We must do things differently to achieve excellent result; together we must change the system and harness the best potential to build capacity and enhance our primary educational system.”
Odey also spoke on the importance of training for teachers properly, saying: “A teacher that has not been trained for a long time is like an old knife that you have left by the side of your garden that you no longer use. We at Cross River SUBEB and UBEC attach so much importance to training.

There will be other subsequent training for teachers across the state, because we are going to give priority to training of teachers, apart from UBEC trainings, we at SUBEB will set up training that will groom you in all aspects not only limiting you to lesson note writing.”
Meanwhile the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has laid out a new work policy for its members.
In his words, Comrade Ayuba Wabba the NLC president stated: “We have given instructions to all of our state councils that where there is liability of salary up to three months, they should also apply the rule of ‘no pay, no work’ it is not only no work, no pay.
You can also apply the rule in a reverse order of ‘no pay, no work’ and that is legitimate because the law provides that after 30 days of working, the worker is entitled to be paid.”
