Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa have won the 2016 CAF Champions League for the first time in their history.
The Bafana Bastyle defeated Zamalek SC of Egypt 3 – 1 on aggregates to claim the coveted trophy.
Sundowns had already beaten Zamalek thrice in this year’s competition as they had met in the group stage and were clearly favourites to win in style.
The team fought so hard to preserve their first leg win at home where as they defeated the Egyptian side 3 – 0.
Although Zamalek won the return leg played at the Borg El Arab Stadium 1 – 0 courtesy a Stanley Nka Ohawuchi strike in the 64th minute, it was not enough as the visitors won on aggregates 3 – 1.
Orlando Pirates were the only South African side to have won the trophy having shocked the continent in 1995.
Mamelodi Sundowns will now represent Africa at the next FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for Japan in December, 2016.
