Ondo Election: INEC staff accused of demanding $1m bribe

– A business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim, has accused Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) of  allegedly demanding a one million naira from him

– He said he has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and reported the official who demanded money from him to the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

– The electoral commission has however denied the claims

Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state, Jimoh Ibrahim, has faulted the Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) for attempting to eliminate him from the election, alleging that an official of the commission demanded a $1 million bribe from him.

Speaking to newsmen at a press briefing, Ibrahim said following the delivery of the court ruling, which ordered INEC to recognise him as the legitimate candidate for the election, the commission had said it will obey the judgment.

However, there were change in plans immediately INEC was served the judgment (paperwork).”

“After the service, the music changed. INEC should not allow one governor to destroy its reputation. We are not saying that INEC will not obey the court judgement.

“One of the officials demanded one million dollar bribe from me to process the court judgement,” he said.

According to Pulse, Ibrahim said he has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and reported the official who demanded money from him to the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.

He also called for the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo state, adding that he is a card-carrying member of the PDP because he cannot conduct a free and fair election in the state.

However, INEC denied the allegation, labeling it as “ungodly.”

The chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Rotimi Oyekunmi said: “It is not true that Mrs Babalola demanded one million dollars from Jimoh Ibrahim. Two other officials of INEC witnessed the encounter between Mrs Babalola and Ibrahim.

“Ibrahim brought a copy of his judgment and wanted to impress it on INEC to collect it but we told him we already have it. It is ungodly of a businessman of his stature to make this kind of allegation.”

Recall that controversial businessman emerged the candidate of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the governorship election in Ondo state after a primary election conducted by the faction in Ibadan.

The exercise was conducted despite a court order stopping Sheriff and his faction from going ahead with the primary election.

Jimoh beat other contenders including Mr Olusola Ebiseni, Honourable Bamiduro Dada, Honourable Niran-Sule Akinsuyi and Mrs Abiye Ademuyegun in the exercise which had 801 delegates from the 18 local governments in Ondo state.
