Ondo poll: PDP youths protest over Jimoh Ibrahim’s candidacy

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some youths of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state has protested in Akure over Mr Jimoh Ibrahim being listed as the governorship candidate of the party.

According to the protesters, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) replaced Mr Eyitayo Jegede as candidate.

Some of the protesters carried placards which read, ‘’No Jegede, no election’’ and ‘’Jegede is our own.’’

The protesters made bonfires and blocked some roads which prompted some commercial banks to close their gates and compelled commuters to disembark from vehicles.

The police public relations officer, Ondo state command, Femi Joseph, pleaded that residents should keep calm as efforts are being made to restore normalcy in the state.

In a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Joseph said the police personnel had been deployed to the scene of protests to avoid escalation.

The Ondo state government called ‘’for calm and peace over the conflicting pronouncements emanating from the courts and INEC’’ on the gubernatorial candidates for the election.

The Ondo state information commissioner, Mr Kayode Akinmade, who made the appeal in a statement, urged the people to keep calm and not resort to self- help.

He said that that steps were being taken to ensure that there was no miscarriage of justice and the will of the people respected.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is insisting that businessman Jimoh Ibrahim is not its candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo state.

Ibrahim was named by the INEC as the candidate of the party thus resulting in jubilation among his loyalists and the camp of Ali Modu Sheriff.

INEC released the full list of the candidates and their running mates on Thursday, October 27 with the Ahmed Makarfi’s faction claiming that Eyitayo Jegede remains the party’s candidate.
