TENSION as fire guts popular market in the north

On Monday, October 24, fire gutted a second hand cloth market in Gusau Zamfara state, News agency of Nigeria reports.

The incident eye witness said occurred late on Monday.

It was also gathered that 12 shops, clothes and other valuables belonging to traders were affected.

Also, over N20 million worth of goods were said have been destroyed in the fire.

One of the victims of the inferno, Adamu Maigwanjo who spoke to journalists at the scene said he lost goods worth over N3 million.

Maigwanjo some other traders in the market lost even more.

He further appealed to the Zamfara state government to come to the aid of the traders to enable them resume their normal business activities.

However, the executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency Sanusi Kwatarkwashi said the agency has mobilized staff to carry out an assessment of the damage in the market.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, Sanusi urged victims to be patient and see the mishap as an act of God.

Meanwhile, traders and residents of the state have expressed worry over the failure of the fire service to respond to the fire.

The fire was put out by the combined efforts of the traders and residents around the market.

The fire fighting vehicles of the state have either broken down or are short of fuel to carry out any rescue operation.
