The attack came the same day supporters of the Makarfi faction and those of 16 other parties taking part in the elections stormed the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demand postponement of the elections.

They claimed that the high level of insecurity in the state at the moment could not guarantee a free and fair Ondo election.

On the same day, Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko paid an impromptu visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, the second in about three weeks, to update him on what he told state correspondents after the meeting was the security situation in the state ahead of the Ondo election.
