Atiku: FG lacks the capacity to combine Confab with 2015 election

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has doubted the capacity of the federal government to organise a successful conference about the same time it is preparing for the 2015 general elections, because “they are two sensitive issues”, therefore, he wants the plan for the convocation of a national conference halted.
Atiku, who spoke in Lagos yesterday, said: “These are two sensitive issues. We all know how controversial electioneering campaign can be in Nigeria and we also know how controversial national conference can be in Nigeria. They are very sensitive issues that cannot be organised the same time”.
The former vice-president spoke as the chief launcher at the Ekiti Day 2013 celebration organised by Ekiti Parapo, Lagos, where he donated N10 million.
“I don’t believe this government has the capacity to handle it and, honestly, this is not the best time to conduct the national conference.
“I believe that Nigerians talking among themselves can sort out their problems but we also need to get our priorities right. We are approaching electioneering and I think our concern now should be how to make sure we have a transparent and credible electoral process in 2015; and after that, we could fix a national conference,” he said.
The former Vice President stated that if actually Jonathan wanted a sincere national conference, he should have held the conference immediately after he was elected in 2011. “By now, we would have finished with the national conference and be facing our election. Because he hasn’t got the capacity to do it and if hasn’t got the capacity to do it, he cannot handle it because this is not the best time to conduct a national conference.”
