The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps has deployed 105 personnel to the three hydro electricity generating plants in northcentral Niger State following strike threats by electricity workers.
A release from the corps in Minna on Friday said the planned strike by the workers at the plants was to protest non-payment of their severance entitlement, following the handover of 14 components of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to new investors.
The power plants are located at Shiroro, Kainji and Jebba.
“Sequel to the directive of the presidency through the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the NSCDC, Niger State Command, has deployed a total of 105 officers and men to oversee the security of all hydro-power stations in the state.
“The plants were recently unbundled by the National Council on Privatization headed by the Vice President, Alhaji Namadi Sambo,’’ the statement said.
It, however, said the deployment of the personnel “to this critical national asset and infrastructure is a routine exercise in line with the agency’s mandate.
“The law mandates the corps to maintain 24-hour surveillance over infrastructure, sites and projects for the federal, state and local governments,“ he said.
He urged members of the public to report any suspicious movements around public facilities to the organisation for prompt action.
