The Sector Commander of the commission in Anambra, Mr Hyginus Omeje, made the call after a novelty match between the female officers of the commission and women journalists in Awka on Thursday.
Omeje said a major means of increasing mental and physical fitness was through exercises while advising motorists to find ways of keeping fit through sports for their total wellbeing.
He said a lot of programmes had been outlined to ensure carnage-free roads during the yuletide and reminded road users to make safety their watch word because it was only the living that celebrated.
“The physical and mental fitness of a driver is very important because driving is a strenuous exercise and it requires all the mental calculations you can make in terms of maneuvering, watching out for other road users and checking speed.
“We have lots of awareness programmes and operational activities lined up in these `ember’ months such as road shows and ‘operation restore sanity’ which will commence on Dec. 1.’’
Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Anambra, Mrs Stella Igboka, said the novelty match was part of the one-week programme of the association.
Igboka called for greater participation and recognition of women in the country’s political landscape so that they could contribute their quota to nation-building.
The match which was kicked off by the Anambra Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Dr Edozie Aroh, ended 2-0 in favour of the road safety team.
