According to him, local government administration ought to be the hub of development in the state.
Justice Onumajulu, who spoke in Owerri at a seminar organised by the Public Complaints Commission, PCC, said: “If those that determine the affairs of this country, the states and local governments and officers that serve under such governments are not constantly reminded of the wrongs they commit in the course of their administration, this country would be heading for the precipice.”
He noted that occasionally, organs of government such as PCC should organize seminars at which their responsibilities, duties and functions should be brought to the knowledge of the common man.
“The law that established this institution spread its dragnet so wide that it covers all tiers of government. It extends to companies incorporated under the Companies and Allied Matters Act.
“What you think, say or do may be wrong in their various applications and if they are wrong, it behoves members of the public to run to the Commission to lay their complaint,” Onumajulu said.
Delivering a lecture, Professor U. U. Chukwumaeze, condemned the sacking of 10,000 youths employed by the Ikedi Ohakim administration, dissolution of statutory boards and commissions, impeachment of the former deputy governor, Sir Jude Agbaso and the withdrawal of accreditation earlier given the Faculty of Law, Imo State University, Owerri.
“The Faculty of Law, which is the greatest image maker faculty of the University, lost accreditation last year, not as a result of the students or lectures but on record, as a result of lack of befitting structure,” the university don said.
While describing the sacking of Agbaso as “very pathetic”, Chukwumaeze also sought to know why Joseph Dina was paid in excess of the contract price.
“Why is the money now? Yet, an innocent citizen has been disgraced on unconfirmed trumped up allegations,” Chukwumaeze said.
