An eye-witness, Ike Mezie, who was among those who attempted to put off the fire, stated that the fire began at about 6.15 p.m., though no one could tell the cause or origin of the fire. He stated that immediately the fire was noticed, a call was put through to the men of the Federal Fire Service for rescue, who responded immediately.
Mezie also revealed that everyone was disappointed when the men of the fire service who came in three vehicles could not do anything to put off the fire which was almost getting to the second floor of the building. “Instead of trying to put out the fire, they stood helplessly watching the firing raze down the entire shop of the company.
“We did not know if they had the liquid to put off the fire or if their pump was faulty. They just stood here watching. If not for the Julius Berger people and members of the Air force, the entire building would have burnt down completely,” he said.
The managing director of Amakennedy Investment Limited, Mr Amaechi Chukwuemeka, told LEADERSHIP FRIDAY that he was in church when he checked his phone and saw 28 missed calls. “I called back and got the shocking news that the building where my company was located was burning. When I got here, I saw officers of the fire service running around confused. They could not do anything. The fire burnt from the first apartment to the last, without much done to put it off,” he said.
