A coalition of socio-political groups from the North has expressed support for the Federal Government’s plan to extend emergency rule in Yobe, Adamawa and Borno.

The Chairman of the Northern Alternative Forum, Alhaji Gidado Ibrahim, gave the support on behalf of the group at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Gidado said the emergency rule had helped to check the escalation of the violence to other parts of the country.

He decried the blackmail and attempts to malign the Federal Government over the extension of the emergency rule and the abduction of Chibok girls.

“As citizens of the North-East we can confirm to the world that without the state of emergency, perhaps by now the states will be ghost towns.
“The state of emergency has succeeded in restoring social and economic activities to the affected states and has reinforced public confidence.

“Therefore, we the citizens of the affected states, oppose any attempts to disrupt the security arrangements put in place by the Federal Government to secure our lives.

“We commend the efforts and support of the vigilante groups, but we recommend the deployment of more men and materials to confront and defeat Boko Haram.

“We endorse the extension of the state of emergency by the Federal Government, and urge our citizens to give maximum support and cooperation to the security forces in their efforts to uproot Boko Haram,” he said.

Gidado appealed to governors of the affected states to cooperate with the Federal Government to defeat the insurgents.

According to him, the problem of Boko Haram is home grown in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe and is never created by the Federal Government.

He condemned the politicisation of the crisis by some politicians to achieve personal gains at the detriment of peace in the region. (NAN)
