The media aide of the Nasarawa State Governor Yakubu Lamai debunked rumours that Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura died while receiving treatment abroad.

Mr. Lamai called people who spread such news “malicious and callous”.

Rumours circulating the state that Al-Makura had died of kidney failure in an unnamed hospital in London were he had gone for medical treatment. Social media users got suspicious from the very beginning:
Meanwhile, in a press statement issued by Al-Makura’s chief press secretary, Mr Lamai said: “We wish to use this medium to assure the citizens of Nasarawa State and confirm with clarity that Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura is alive, hale and hearty.

It was said that the gossips may be separate with the imminent canvassing campaigns when some desperate politicians employ every ungodly means of getting at their opponents rather than selling their manifestoes on issues.

We recognise that this is election campaign period and publicity strategists are likely to use every available tool to gain public attention including peddling unfounded rumours about the governor’s health,” the statement read.

The statement which called for dedication from the residents of the state appealed to politicians to concentrate on making the ongoing campaigns issues-based.

It would be recalled that in the winter of 2012, comparable rumours were pushed when Al-Makura went to the United States for a petty operation on his hip bone.
