According to Algerian television network Nahar TV, the Algerian army has killed the Jund al-Khilafa jihadist group leader, who is said to be responsible for the execution of a Frenchman in September.
The leader. Abdelmalek Gouri had made his group pledge allegiance to the deadly Islamic State (IS) organisation that has been at war with Iraq and Syria.
Gouri was killed on Monday in Isser, 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of Algiers.
Two other members of the group, was killed in the mission in Kabylie region, the channel said.
The defence ministry revealed that the shooting took place in Isser, which has a police training facility.
According to Nahar Tv, Gouri’s identity has been confirmed by the army but the ministry said that the: “identification of the terrorists is continuing”
The Army had said on saturday that it killed one who they described as a “dangerous criminal” wanted since 1995, when the hunt for Gouri was launched.
The army also recoverred from the terrorists, large quantity of guns, ammunition and explosives during the operation.
The group had killed 55 year-old French mountain guide Herve Gourdel in September, Thegroup was formed in september after splintering from Al-Qaeda
