Reports reaching us from Bauchi State revealed that goods worth millions of naira have been razed by fire in a popular market in the metropolis.
Daily Independent reported that the inferno which started at about 1.30pm on Wednesday razed down a shopping complex.
The fire reportedly destroyed more than 10 shops thereby throwing traders into a state of confusion.
Some of the traders were seen dashing in and out of the complex trying to save few of their goods that hasn’t been gutted by the fire.
It was gathered that the state officials of the fire service did not arrive the scene of the incident on time, a situation that propelled the youths to combat the fire outbreak.
A witness who spoke with journalists on condition of anonymity said the shopping complex was newly constructed, adding that no fewer than 10 shops were destroyed in the incident.
Another witness, who gave his name as Suleiman Mohammed said “the fire razed all the shops at the first storey building. When the fire service delayed, the youths started throwing water to stop the fire from affecting the remaking shops at the second floor.”
One of the affected trader, who gave his name as Usman Ahmed, said he owns a cosmetic shop in the complex, revealed that he has to start life all over again as the fire had burnt all his wares.
“I learnt that someone was burning something and before he knew it, the fire went out of hand and spread to the buildings, but the situation could have been saved if only the men of the fire service came on time to put out the fire,” Ahmed said.
