The Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has set up a 15-man Economic Advisory Committee to advise his government on economic policies that would speedily bring about sustainable economic development.
A release from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Uwakwe Abugu, said the Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Msgr (Prof). Obiora Ike, had been named chairman of the committee while the Economic Adviser to the governor would serve as secretary.
Abugu said members of the committee include the former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; Chairman, Innoson Group of Companies, Innocent Chukwuma; former Economic Adviser to the president and current Director, Institute of Development Studies, University of Nigeria, Prof. Ostia Ogbu; and Chief Chilo Offiah.
Others are former Aviation Minister, Amb. Fidelia Njeze; investor and civil society activist, Chief Loretta Aniagolu; Dr. Chikelu Mba, Kelvin Emeka Onah, Emeka Odo, Princess Ngozi Nnaedozie, John Okoye and Ikechukwu Chioke.
Abugu said Governor Ugwuanyi desired that the pool of experts would effectively discharge its obligations by thinking of new ideas on economic issues with a view to giving government advice on what ought to be done to enhance the economic fortunes of the state.
He said the functions of the experts would be mainly to promote balanced and sustainable economic growth, to promote and engender adequate employment for the people of the state and to promote a system of fair income distribution among various groups in the state.
Abugu explained that the setting up of the committee was in response to the concern across the country over dwindling oil revenue which has made it difficult for some states and even the Federal Governments to pay staff salaries and meet other obligations to the people.
