The Bring Back Our Girls Group #BBOG yesterday, Thursday, August 27, marched the streets of Abuja to mark 500 days since over 200 Chibok girls were kidnapped from their hostels by Boko Haram in Borno state.

Prominent religious leaders also called on the federal government to expedite action to rescue the abducted Chibok girls. The Catholic Bishop of Abuja, Cardinal Bishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Imam of Apo Mosque, Shiekh Nura Khalid also expressed their reservations on the little efforts made by religious leaders to push for the release of the girls.

Onaiyekan at the march said:

“The church has always expressed its sympathy about the abduction, though it might not be much, we have always prayed for the release of the girls and the crisis in the Northeast. 

“What I think is possible is that the Islam community in Nigeria is challenged now, what they (Boko Haram), do and preach is contrary to Islam. We must do as much as we can to tell others that they are wrong.”

Sheikh, however, slightly disagrees that religious leaders are not doing enough.

He said:

“I can’t say our religious leaders are doing enough, when there isn’t education or security in Nigeria. So we must act now. We must stand together as a nation. I want to tell the world that we Nigerian Muslims‎ are always ready to unite with our Christian brothers and sisters to fight for the soul of Nigeria.”

The co-coordinator of BBOG, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, however, reassured the public that the group will not give up the struggle until the girls are released from Boko Haram’s custody.

The Bring Back Our Girls Group #BBOG is a pressure group that came into being when the immediate past government led by former President Jonathan acted too late to rescue the kidnapped girls. At some point, the government did not believe that the girls were kidnapped.
