Reports that the Muhammadu Buhari led-government is set to probe Senators and House of Representative members over non executed constituency projects earmarked for them in the 2014 and 2015 budgets has drawn wide criticism.
President Buhari has been criticised for prioritising probes while neglecting the state of the Nigerian economy.
The moves by the administration to probe the NASS members follows allegations by former chairman, House committee on appropriation, Mr Abdulmumin Jibrin, that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, and three other principal officers had requested the inclusion of N40bn projects in the 2016 budget, besides other projects in sums ranging from N20bn to N30bn.
The allegations by Jibrin has prompted the government to start compiling the list of legislators in both chambers of the National Assembly over constituency projects earmarked for them in the 2014 and 2015 budgets, which were not executed.
According to the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), the compilation was being done by the police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).
However, the move by the government to probe the lawmakers has generated mixed reactions from some Nigerians who view the latest probe as a waste of time.
In the face of the declining economy, the displeased Nigerians have urged the Buhari led administration to focus on revamping the economy instead of embarking on endless probes that often provide no result.
