– Pastor Tunde Bakare said has affirmed that corruption is now official in Nigeria
– He said following the unbridled looting of the treasury, it was obvious that the abnormal had become the norm
– The cleric noted that despite the anti-corruption war, the stench of corruption remains “fantastically” horrible
Pastor Tunde Bakare, the founder of the Latter Rain Assembly said government officials in Nigeria are not just corrupt, but they have succeeded in making corruption official in the country.
Speaking at the launch of Onyekachi Ubani Foundation in Lagos, at the weekend, Bakare said corruption has continued to pollute the national atmosphere and to attract the derision of the international community throughout the 17 years of democratic rule, Vanguard reports.

He noted: “At the twilight of the military era in Nigeria’s political trajectory, the name ‘Nigeria’ became synonymous with a certain word, a word that elicits the image of a cesspool running over corruption.
“At that time, precisely in 1999, Transparency International rated Nigeria the second most corrupt country in the world in terms of perception, second only to her eastern neighbour, Cameroon.
“For instance, given the unbridled looting of the treasury at the time, reportedly to the tune of over 1billion dollars as was subsequently uncovered following the exit of the military, it was obvious that the abnormal had become the norm, the illegal had become legal, the outrageous had become banal and the aberrant had become the gold standard.”

According to him, the stench of corruption remains “fantastically” horrible despite the emergence of a new government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, which is committed to fighting corruption to a standing and despite global acknowledgment that Nigeria is gradually cleaning the rot left by previous administrations.
Speaking earlier during his address of welcome, Femi Adeshina who represented President Buhari commended the vision of the foundation.
He said it was significant that the foundation was dedicated to helping the poor and needy in the society and also celebrating those who made the country proud with virtuous acts.
Corruption is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges Nigeria is facing and that is why President Buhari has made fighting it to a standstill one of his priorities.
