Top 7 people arrested for Facebook posts (No 1 will shock you)

When news broke yesterday that a Nigerian blogger, Abu Sidiq was arrested by the EFCC for the crime of ‘cyberstalking’,  it showed that posting online, either in personal blogs or other social media, has its risks.

This becomes especially clear, when you post information or make statements that affect sensitive matters, or people in positions of power.

There have been various cases of people been arrested and even jailed for posting stuff on social media, especially Facebook, here is a list:

1. Ojo Emmanuel

Ojo Emmanuel became a more popular blogger, after his arrest

Ojo Emmanuel was arrested in the early morning of Monday, September 28 2015, by the police. His crime? He was arrested because he had a post on Facebook in which he alleged that the wife of the Ogun state governor was arrested in the UK for money laundering.

His arrest sparked an uproar, and after his release, he threatened to sue the state government.

2. Curtis Ugbo

Curtis Ugbo made the wrong Facebook post and landed in prison

After a  a ground-breaking ceremony to open the Okpella Cement Factory in Edo state. The Senior Special Assistant on Media to Adams Oshiomole the Edo state governor, Mr Curtis Ugbo made a Facebook post.

Using the caption: “What’s wrong with my Boss?” He said that the governor didn’t involve the state’s stakeholders, House of Assembly members or National Assembly members in the project.

Immediately, Oshiomole ordered the arrest of Ugbo, the security officials allegedly broke the doors and window of his apartment, and forcefully whisked him away. He was arraigned for gun possession and posting an article likely to cause a breach of peace.

Beauty salon owner made this Facebook posts

A woman who owns a beauty salon in the UK was arrested when she made a post on Facebook after the Paris terror attacks in November 2015.

She posted that she would not be taking on bookings from those practicing the Muslim faith. According to Thames Valley Police , the 43-year-old woman was arrested under section 19 of the UK Public Order Act. The Facebook posts were later deleted.

4. Justin Carter

Justin Carter made a very disturbing Facebook post

Justin Carter is a 19-year-old Canadian who was arrested and jailed by the police for making a Facebook post. He was jailed in February 2013.

The reason? He was allegedly insulted by a fellow gamer who questioned his mental state and he made this post on Facebook:

“I think Ima shoot up a kindergarten / And watch the blood of the innocent rain down/ And eat the beating heart of one of them.”

A Canadian who saw the post, reported to the police and he was arrested.

5. Paula Asher

A ‘lol’ landed Paula Asher in jail

18-year-old Paula Asher was driving drunk, when she hit a car, with four teenagers in it and drove off. She was arrested by the police for driving while drunk and then let go, since no one was injured.

However, on getting home, Asher made a Facebook post saying: “My dumb ass got a dui and I hit a car…lol.” 

The parents of the teenagers found the post in bad taste, police ordered Asher to take it down and when she refused, she was arrested and spent two days in jail. After which she apologized.

6. Cameron Ambrosio

Cameron Ambrosio’s Facebook post almost ended his rapping career prematurely

Cameron D’Ambrosio is an 18-year-old a high school student who is also an aspiring rapper. When he posted the following lyrics on Facebook:

“F— a boston bombinb [sic] wait til u see the sh– I do, I’ma be famous for rapping, and beat every murder charge that comes across me.” 

He was told what he posted was a “terroristic threat.” He was arrested, but later let go.

7. Muhammad Ruhul Amin Khandaker

Amin Khandaker’s Facebook post landed him in jail

In Bangladesh, a country known for strict policies on Facebook posts,  Muhammad Ruhul Amin Khandaker was sentenced to six months in jail for joking about his desire for the Prime Minister to die.

Khandaker who worked for Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Information and Technology, was commenting on Facebook about  fatal traffic accidents. He typed something to the effect of, “Why can’t this happen to [Prime Minister] Sheikh Hasina?”

Obviously you have to be careful what you post on social media, right?
