– The crisis rocking the PDP may not be ending any time soon
– Buruji Kashamu said the court cases may linger till 2019
– He said the decision by the PDP BoT to hold a new convention in Abuja will not resolve the crisis
The senator representing Ogun East senatorial district, Buruji Kashamu, has advised leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to forget about quick resolution of the crisis rocking the party.
Kashamu, a staunch supporter of the factional PDP chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, said the cases in court pertaining to the leadership tussle may continue till 2019, Daily Trust reports.

He was reacting to the resolutions reached at a recent meeting held by members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja on Monday.
According to him, the decision taken by the BoT to hold the national convention of the party in Abuja, without resolving the leadership crisis, would worsen the situation, adding that the coming convention would not be different from the botched Port Harcourt conventions of May 21 and August 17.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, August 31, he said: “Even if the convention is held in Abuja, without finding an equitable and fair political solution to all the legal issues in court, the legal tussle will continue till 2019, and that will be to the irreversible detriment of our party.
“To say the least, those pronouncements (made by the BoT) neither portrayed a genuine spirit of reconciliation nor were they expected from our leaders who are the conscience and the respected leading lights of the party.
“The BoT could then ask the two leaders, to jointly draw up plans and programmes towards the hosting of an all-embracing national convention. Anyone who does not cooperate with such a transparent and unbiased reconciliation process can then be viewed as recalcitrant and not having the interest of the party at heart.”
Kashamu appealed to members of the party and the BoT to take time and reflect on how to move the party forward.

“We should reflect on our roles, choices and positions knowing full well that we are making history with whatever role we play good or bad, honourable or dishonourable, in the extant leadership crisis,” he added.
The PDP is enmeshed in a legal battle over the chairmanship position.
The party sacked Sheriff as chairman at its May 21 national convention and constituted a caretaker committee led by Ahmed Makarfi.
Sheriff has refused to step down, insisting he remains the chairman.

Things got more complicated when two Federal High Courts gave contradictory judgment.
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt declared that Makarfi is the chairman of the party while another one in Abuja ruled that Sheriff remains chairman of the party.
