Some social media commentators have alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress influenced the decision of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC which declared Jimoh Ibrahim the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo state.

INEC has named Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP for the November 26 governorship election in Ondo state.

INEC has named Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP for the November 26 governorship election in Ondo state.

Ibrahim who belongs to the Modu Sheriff faction of the PDP replaces Eyitayo Jegede who was the candidate of the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party.

The action of the commission has sent the camp of the factional National Chairman of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff, into wild jubilation but has also attracted criticism from some Nigerians who fear that INEC may be playing to the script of the APC.

The emergence of Ibrahim came on the heels of a ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which rejected a move by Jegede to appeal against the recognition of Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP.

Specifically, Justice Okon Abang, on Thursday, October 27, dismissed the application by Jegede on the grounds that he lacked the locus standi to file it.

However, those opposed to INEC’s stand to uphold the court decision, described Jimoh Ibrahim’ selection as a blow to democracy in Nigeria.

Others called on the commission to stop being partisan and reverse its decision to pick Ibrahim as the PDP candidate.

McJohnson Olusesan Ojo: “This is a great injustice to the people of Ondo state, this is a crime against humanity perpetrated by buhari/APC through their loyal justice abang okon.”

Ben Cool: “Buhari is destroying our democracy gradually and those who matter just keep quiet. It is against the electoral act for INEC to have picked a candidate whose primaries it never supervised or was ever invited to witness. The electoral act also says that primaries for an elective position must be conducted in the state where the election is to take place, but that of Jimoh Ibrahim was conducted in Oyo state instead of Ondo. The INEC under Buhari has become lawless.”

Who witnessed this primary election? Is Sheriff led faction recognized? Sheriff is working for APC and any judge dat says he’s not the APC chairman will painted and arrested by DSS. What a country! What a shame to this administration!”
