A magistrate court in Benin, Edo state, has sentenced 18-year-old Shegun Olamide, to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a N5,000 cell phone, Vanguard reports.

The magistrate, Mrs P.E Foy-Yamah, sentenced the accused after pleading guilty to the charge of theft even after he begged the court for mercy.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ada Johnbull told the court that the teenager committed the offence on Friday, October 21 at about 4:00pm in Benin city.

He said the handset was stolen from one Amen Kingsley adding that the offence contravened Section 390 of the criminal code.

Recently, in Ikorodu, an 18-year-old boy Segun Adeyefa was arrested by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos state police command while on a routine patrol.

Adeyefa was arrested due to selling of bar soaps in form of mobile phones and persuades people to purchase them. He confessed, saying he was on a revenge mission after he was also a victim in the same manner about a year ago.

However, Adeyefa had successfully sold the bar-phone to a man at N3, 500 before he was caught that day.
