Social media is a computer-mediated tool that allows people to create, share or exchange information, ideas and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. The most important word here is “SHARING”.

Internet service and surfing became more popular after the coming of mobile network in Nigeria. That was after the return of democracy from military dictatorship.

It also coincides with the opening of major social networks like Facebook (2003), Twitter etc. People from across the world join social media/networks; right now, it is estimated that there are over 1.6 billion people in various social networks.

Social media/networks have helped greatly in mobilization, and for mass action in Nigeria. The greatest achievement here in Nigeria is the ‘2015 election’.

Unfortunately, social media is not well regulated in Nigeria. Some online blogs, papers, and sites are not registered. Some of them are unethical and unprofessional in disseminating information to the general public.

Privacy, information stealing and plagiarism is the manifest. Government should make efforts to regulate the social media activities.

Government should assist legal and law abiding citizens as well as media companies, by ensuring their rights are protected. Fraudulent groups and persons should also be checked so as to harness the benefits of the social media.
