Governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura spoke about the slash in civil servants’ salary in his speech while flagging off the sale of 150 metric tons of fertilisers, which was subsidised by the government to farmers in the state.

The Nasarawa state governor appealed to the striking workers to return to work and suspend their strike “in the interest of the state.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the civil servants began the strike in protest against the announcement by the state government to slash the salaries of public officers and civil servants by 50 per cent across board.
Governor Al-Makura, on the other hand said the 50 per cent cut in salaries is “a sacrifice every one needed to make.” The governor also said the sacrifice became necessary in view of the decrease in revenue being generated into the purse of the state.
The state governor mentioned that despite the reduction in its resources, government agreed to subsidise the price of fertilisers sold to farmers at N3,000 per bag.
Governor A-Makura stated that the warm hand of the government extended to the farmers was purposely to increase farming in Nasarawa state in line with federal government’s passion to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on income from sale of crude oil.
He stated further: “We would continue to support farming activities in the state to enrich our farmers by supplying them with fertilizers and other farm inputs at subsidised rate.

“We are more than ever before determined as a government to invest in other sectors of the economy given the current problems that have bedeviled the entire country.
“This is a moment of sober reflection as a nation, hence our resolve to continue to subsidise farm inputs for farmers in order to guaranty better and quality live for the people in the state.”
Muazu Ishaq, Nasarawa state chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), who spoke all behalf of other farmers thanked the state government for aiding farmers in Nasarawa.
Ishaq advised the state government to ensure and find a way of improving mechanised agriculture by reintroducing tractors hiring unit in the state Ministry of Agriculture for easy access to farmers.
NAN reports that the chairman of the AFAN stated:“Most farmers in the state are so poor that they cannot afford to buy their own tractors, hence the need for the government to reintroduce the scheme.”
Information has it that Governor Al-Makura who is talking about slashing workers’ pay is the chairman of Almakura Nigeria Limited, a company that is into importing and servicing agricultural and industrial machinery. He is also a big player in the real estate sector with his company, Ta’al Nigeria Limited having properties in Nigeria’s major cities and in the United States of America. Al-Makura is also the owner of the prestigious Ta’al Lake Resort, Abuja and the Ta’al Conference Hotel, Lafia.
